Utah and Texas Stars of First Preliminary Night at Miss America 2018
Miss America 2018 pageant is about to culminate and the stars of the event have started shining brightly already. The competition kicked off on September 7, 2017 wherein delegates all across from fifty states and District of Columbia showcased their talents.
On the first preliminary event of Miss America 2018, seventeen candidates presented their charismatic talents before the jury and the audience. The star of the eve was, Miss Utah, JessiKate Riley whose performance of a classical violin arrangement won her the first night’s Talent Award and a $2,000 scholarship.
Subsequent to winning the Talent Award, JessiKate Riley said her talent was years in the making. With her 115 years old violin, which she calls “Sam,” Riley impressed the judges with a classical showpiece, which she learned at the age of 12. She opined, “It’s out of this world to be here. My goal coming into this was to portray my heart through mu music, because that’s my best form of communication, and I guess it worked!”
During the same event, Miss Texas, Margana Wood won the first preliminary night’s Lifestyle and Fitness award. Margana said the hardest part of training was giving up her beloved Diet Coke, she added, “I was honestly so surprised. I had such a fit group, but at the end of the day, it’s about confidence and I’m so glad the judges saw that in me”. Wood also receives a $1,000 scholarship, which she hopes to put towards graduate school.
The preliminary competition also included evening wear and an on-stage interview round, where contestants revealed their chosen platforms.
The preliminary competition was hosted by former Miss New Jersey, Dena Blizzard. The jury included 13 former Miss Americas who came to watch this year’s competition. The second preliminary night is slated to take place on September 8, 2017 at 7 p.m.
