Monalysa Alcântara Crowned Miss Brasil 2017
Monalysa Alcântara was crowned as Miss Universe Brazil 2017 on August 19, 2017 during the grand finale of Miss Brasil 2017 held in the city of Ilhabela, on the coast of São Paulo. She succeeds Raissa Santana as new Miss Universe Brazil and will now represent Brazil at Miss Universe 2017, which is slated to take place in the month of November this year.
Monalysa Alcântara defeated 26 other contestants to grab the title of Miss Universe Brazil 2017. During her final question and answer round, she was asked about the strategy to represent Brazilian beauty internationally, to which she opined, “My super strategy will be to be myself: a north-eastern woman, who has gone through many things, many pains that made me who I am today, I will be myself.”
Post her crowning, Monalysa said that she did not recognized herself as a black girl as a child, and she wants to help the black woman value their own beauty. She further added, “Through my story, I will help black women to look more beautiful and show that they are able to follow their own dreams, just as I followed mine.”
18 years old, newly crowned Miss Brasil 2017 is a management student and hails from Piauí. The elated beauty queen, Monalysa Alcântara added, “I want to give a voice to women and I will not accept seeing any of them saying that they cannot. They called me ugly and today I represent the Brazilian beauty.”
During the coronation gala of Miss Brasil 2017, Juliana Mueller from Rio Grande do Sul was crowned as the first runner up, while Stephany Pim from Espírito Santo was adjudged as the second runner up.
Brazil has won Miss Universe crown twice in the year 1963 and 1968 under the representation of Iêda Maria Vargas and Martha Vasconcellos respectively.
