Tessa Dee Crowned Miss South Dakota USA 2017
Tessa Dee was crowned as Miss South Dakota USA 2017. She succeeds Madison McKeown, who was a Top 10 finalist at Miss USA 2016, and will now represent South Dakota in the coming edition of Miss USA 2017, wherein Deshauna Barber of District of Columbia will pass on her crown to her successor.
Born in Mitchell, South Dakota, Tessa grew up calling the Corn Palace City her home. Throughout her childhood, Tessa was a competitive gymnast, which gave her the opportunity to travel the state of South Dakota and the Midwest. Her gymnastics experience led her to two high school state championships and three All-America honors for the sport of gymnastics. Along with gymnastics, Tessa competed on the track team running hurdles and sprints for Mitchell High School.
South Dakota is one of the least successful states, having only placed three times. One notable Miss South Dakota USA was Vanessa Shortbull (2000), one of the first Native Americans to compete at Miss USA. Shortbull was also Miss South Dakota 2002. They have never had a winner yet.
